If you want to leave the keys on, compressed air is the most effective way to clean around them. Just make sure you use it in a well ventilated area, as it contains chemicals that can be harmful when inhaled. Compressed air is also good for cleaning out the ports along the side of the laptop.

The keys should be soaked in lukewarm water with a few drops of washing-up liquid until any buildup and grime can be easily wiped away. Then lay them out to dry. Leave the laptop open to ensure it can also dry out. It is essential not to reconnect the laptop until all the components are completely dry.
